Little boy in patient’s robes met in the chapel at Briarstone Asylum. When the party first arrived on the third day of the campaign, he was sleeping. Soulful eyes. Reportedly has seizures.
In Chapter 13, Bates expressed to Dora the desire to play with some of Gull’s “toys.”
On the party’s fourth night at Briarstone, Bates’ condition had improved to the point where could begin hanging out with Tolman, Brenton, and Maeve in the playroom.
In Chapter 19, Dora used her osteomancy ability to determine that he was Neutral Good in alignment.
In Chapter 21, Gull finished making him a toy alchemical torch that he could play with. Bates then began joining in Gull’s ranged weapon training sessions led by Vaustin.
He participated in the battle for the chapel in Chapters 29 & 30, wielding a crossbow that Denman dropped. During the battle, he slew Horsepiss with the crossbow before Benji Bald-Belly assaulted him and caused considerable damage to his face, ultimately severing his nose.
In Chapter 31, the players learned his surname and that he shared it with Mura. Both were committed at Briarstone Asylum by the same person, a man named Horace Yopchick. Mura was committed decades ago because of her mutism, Bates more recently because of his seizures. The staff always believed both conditions to be the result of abuse. But because they were admitted in different decades and treated by different doctors in different wings, no one ever put together that they are siblings.
