GUNSLINGER (Black Powder Vaulter) 5/SPIRITUALIST 1

Bates holds his head and screams as a human-shaped cloud of ash rises behind him.Little boy in patient’s robes met in the chapel at Briarstone Asylum. When the party first arrived on the third day of the campaign, he was sleeping. Soulful eyes. Reportedly has seizures.

In Chapter 13, Bates expressed to Dora the desire to play with some of Gull’s “toys.”

On the party’s fourth night at Briarstone, Bates’ condition had improved to the point where could begin hanging out with TolmanBrenton, and Maeve in the playroom.

In Chapter 19, Dora used her osteomancy ability to determine that he was Neutral Good in alignment.

In Chapter 21, Gull finished making him a toy alchemical torch that he could play with. Bates then began joining in Gull’s ranged weapon training sessions led by Vaustin.

He participated in the battle for the chapel in Chapters 29 & 30, wielding a crossbow that Denman dropped. During the battle, he slew Horsepiss with the crossbow before Benji Bald-Belly assaulted him and caused considerable damage to his face, ultimately severing his nose.

In Chapter 31, the players learned his surname and that he shared it with Mura. Both were committed at Briarstone Asylum by the same person, a man named Horace Yopchick. Mura was committed decades ago because of her mutism, Bates more recently because of his seizures. The staff always believed both conditions to be the result of abuse. But because they were admitted in different decades and treated by different doctors in different wings, no one ever put together that they are siblings.

In Chapter 43, it was learned that Bates came to Briarstone when he was seven years old and had spent the last three or four years there. Now brimming with a sense of capability and accomplishment.

By Chapter 45, Bates was showing an uncanny facility with and understanding of Rony’s alchemical torch.

During the solstice ceremonies in Chapter 49, he revealed that he came from a large family with a father who paid to have a priestess of Pharasma take him away for an “exorcism.” The priestess lied, delivering Bates to Briarstone instead. His father had many wives, including one named “Momma Yopchick,” which made Mura realize that they were related.

During the Skum attack on the Sellen Starling in Chapter 50 (Part 2), when he manifested Ray as a Phantom, Bates was revealed to be a Gunslinger/Spiritualist.

In Chapter 51, after realizing that Ray had actually died, Bates struggled to come to terms with having brought him back.

In Chapter 62, Bates revealed that he had been wrestling with guilt and responsibility over what he did to Ray, and a  new perspective on his father, but a conversation with Maeve eased his conscience somewhat.
