In the magical journal the party discovered in the hold of the Bloodwind, Dora was able to piece together some of Vadrack‘s travels in the final months of 4718:
- She learned that Vadrack delivered Weiralai to Thrushmoor right around the same time Stazi, Winter, and Omari arrived: either a day or two before the earthquake (which happened on 17 Lamashan). Weiralai had brought the Kuru with her, which they’d picked up on the Cannibal Isles in the Shackles (over 2,000 miles away), the previous day. Weiralai had something she was looking forward to taking care of in Thrushmoor, and wanted some time (three weeks or so) to see to her business.
- Dora learned that the Bloodwind returned to Thrushmoor just as the Sellen Starling was leaving it, on 11 Neth. Deggorhbaatha saw the ship and swam out to it and filled in Vadrack on all that had happened. He pressed the captain to immediately follow the Starling, and though Vadrack was tempted by the closeness of Thema, he said he had an oath to fulfill.
- The next part of the journal was representative of what makes it so difficult to follow. Dora could locate an entry from when the Bloodwind next returned to Golarion, which was a few days later in the Real World (13 Neth). But weeks worth of strange activities were listed in the journal in the meantime, as it seemed Vadrack made a quest to a volcano called Ngranek, on the Isle of Oriab, far across the Dreamlands’ Southern Sea. There he “spoke at the faces of the Earth Gods” and learned where Weiralai could be found. By that point, Deggorbaatha was growing impatient and railed continuously about revenge. Vadrack debated feeding him to Ellish, but decided that since they were on Oriab, they’d pick up some Vooniths. Which they did. Then they popped back to the Material Plane and dropped them off, hoping they’d give the Skum a sense of satiation. Vadrack offered to leave Deggorhbaatha there, but the coward declined and begged to stay on the Bloodwind.
- Then Vadrack sailed the Bloodwind to Leng and underwent an epic quest to find Weiralai and free her from the slave-pits of the Moon-beasts. Even though less than a month passed in the Real World before the Bloodwind returned, the quest in the Dreamlands seems to have taken many months (potentially years?) in Vadrack’s timeline. The notes were sporadic and confusing, and it was hard for Dora to parse a complete story. (For example: one whole week was encapsulated with just two words: “They molt!” There was no reference to what the they was. Or whether the molting was a good thing or a bad thing.) But, after a great length of time Vadrack fulfilled what he called his “blood oath” and found Weiralai. However, by the time he got to her, she didn’t exactly need to be “rescued.” She had changed, and Vadrack was actually a little fearful of her. She had been, in her words, “embraced by the King,” who had “hollowed her heart and warped her flesh.” With some new, apparently, divine powers granted by the King in Yellow, she had slain her Moon-beast captors and was waiting for Vadrack to bring her the Bloodwind, which she considered to be her safest means back to the Dreamlands. She had one last mission for Vadrack there, and so they picked up a platoon of Leng soldiers and set out. Whatever the mission was, it must have gone smoothly, for there was scant reference to it, and once it was done, it seemed that whatever ties bound Vadrack and Weiralai together had run their course and Vadrack was free to finally hunt down “the witch Thema Antea” and put her to death for the “foul debasement” she’d caused him. They picked up some flying denizens of the Dreamlands (the Alhool and the Nightgaunts) and planned to use them to harry her ship and beat down their defenses before moving in to destroy them.
