Ray’s skipping freely down a lakeside road shrouded in mist [revealed in Chapter 39 to be Market Street in Thrushmoor]. He’s happy. He’s joyous.
He turns back and waves cheerily at the person following him down the street. He then returns to his skipping, but just as he’s bringing his head around to the front, he catches out of the corner of his eye who exactly is following him.
It’s himself.
And the other Ray is frantically waving his arms, trying to catch his attention. But the fog is too thick. And it’s muffling his screams of, “Stop! Stop! Stop!”
And soon the screams themselves stop as the other Ray is beheaded in the flash of a gleaming war razor.
