During the first interlude of Act III, Sam was absorbed into a painting of Carcosa in Miacknian Mun’s house and forgotten by Dabwick.
Dabwick mourned his fate in a meditation vision in Chapter 101.
In Chapter 115, Dabwick revealed that their Cap of Human Guise had once belonged to Sam in their early days, and because of that fact, it was very important to Dabs. Dabs meditated further on their past with Sam in Chapter 116.
In Chapter 168, Dabwick dreamed of the shame they felt over having led Sammy to be trapped in Mun’s painting for so many years.
In Chapter 169, he was released from the trap that took him to Carcosa eleven years earlier. He now stared with the cold, dead eyes of a serial killer, and seemed to only “put on the role of the old Sammy” when conversing with Dabwick.
Despite all that Alyanna, Chet, and Sam had suffered in Carcosa (and the fact that they seemingly hadn’t had anything to eat except for grubs and mushrooms during all their years of exile), all three still seemed to be intrigued by the possibility of being returned back to the Empty City.
In Chapter 170, as a battle with Grip’s Shachath Demon erupted in Dabwick’s apartment complex, Alyanna teleported away with Chet and Sam.
