A black ship with blood-red sails and an animated, obscene, tentacled figurehead seen in the Act II Epilogue materializing from heavy fog on Lake Encarthan near Thrushmoor. Its figurehead was capable of speech. A mysterious Denizen of Leng was at the wheel, and a dead woman served beside him.
In Chapters 91 and 92, it seemed as though the four Vooniths that attacked the Sellen Starling outside of Illmarsh had been sent or released by the Bloodwind.
The party learned more about the vessel in Chapter 93: a living longship from the Plateau of Leng with famed red sails, captained by Vadrack. The crew shifts from job to job besides Vadrack and Ellish, and occasionally Weiralai. The prow is a giant figurehead in the shape of a Moon-beast. Has the ability to create powerful winds to fill its sails, and can fly through the air and to the moon. Can travel between the Dimension of Dreams, Plateau of Leng, and the Material Plane. When they dock, Vadrack is able to fold the ship up and put it in his pocket.
In Chapters 112 and 114, the Starling was attacked by an Alhool and four Nightgaunts, and it seemed as though they had originated from the Bloodwind.
In Chapter 115, while interrogating Nheb, the party learned that Nheb and Ulf had witnessed the arrival of the ship as it materialized from the Dreamlands fog that seems to follow its arrival on the Material Plane. They spotted the Alhool flying to the south and Ulf told Nheb to follow and attack it, so he did.
In Chapter 116, Dora contemplated the Bloodwind‘s nature as an intelligent magic item. She recognized that it would act effectively as a Construct with mental ability scores, a will of its own, and the ability to take actions in combat (including using its ropes, manacles, booms, etc to attack people aboard it). She knew that it has something called an Ego score, and if someone wished to control it, they would have to engage in a mental battle against that score. Success might result in being able to control the vessel for a day. Failure might result in being controlled by the Bloodwind.
In Chapter 121, after defeating Vadrack and his crew, the party analyzed the ship. When Dabwick probed it with Detect Magic and Stazi probed it with Detect Evil, both were left sickened and reeling by the overwhelming sense of evil emanating from the vessel. Dora spoke with the ship long enough to buy time for Vik and Grip to search its belowdeck area (physical contact with the Bloodwind was also an unpleasant experience for them). In the end, the party lit the ship aflame and it vanished back to the Dreamlands.
In Chapter 125, Dora observed the Bloodwind floating upon a pool of Nepenthe in a crater on the surface of the Dreamland's moon, in a psychometry vision from Deggorhbaatha’s headband.
In Chapter 147, the party learned that Weiralai and Vadrack had used the Bloodwind to transport the Yellow King from the Forsaken Caravanserai to a prison on the Dreamlands moon.
